The Challenge: Create an illusion using isometric lines.
Materials Needed: Isometric Grid paper You can print some or you can create some (that just takes a bit of patience), pencil and ERASER. This challenge is best done as an exercise in erasing, changing and play. You can see in my time lapse below just how much erasing I did and I’ve done this kind of thing many times before. Be gentle with yourself.
Math concepts you could explore with this challenge: Angles, geometric construction, geometry, isometric grids, perspective
Depending on how you use this activity, you may engage with different mathematical standards. I’ve listed possible connected math content above. Here are a few suggestions for how you might integrate the 8 mathematical practices. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments!
5.) Use appropriate tools strategically. With isometric creations, it’s important to start seeing a triangular grid rather than a square one. How can you best isolate the parallel lines necessary to effectively pull off your illusion?
6.) Attend to precision. Make note of which types of creations work best under which circumstances. When do stairs appear to start and end on the same landing? How is that illusion created effectively?
7.) Look for and make use of structure. What pieces of structure are needed to carry this off? When have you created an illusion and when have you simply drawn a regular stair case?
